Adhering to the Truth in Times of Fitnah – I

We should neither be deceived by the many sects, parties, groups, and misleading leaders who call towards Fitnah (trial), nor should we pay attention to them. TheUmmah (nation) will only be reformed by following what the righteous predecessors followed. It will only be reformed by referring to the Quran and the Sunnah(tradition) according to the way both of them were understood by the righteous predecessors. This is the true religion by the consensus of the leading scholars, may Allaah have mercy upon them. Moreover, this is the way to salvation from deviation and falling into the pit of temptation and error.

Allaah The Almighty Says (what means): {And do not be like the ones who became divided and differed after the clear proofs had come to them. And those will have a great punishment.} [Quran 3:105]

In a Hadeeth (narration) on the authority of Abu Hurayrah, may Allaah be pleased with him, he said that the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said:“I have left among you two things (which if you adhere to) you will never go astray: the Book of Allaah and my Sunnah. They will never separate until they come to the Hawdh (the Basin).” [Saheeh]

The best of people are the three generations: the righteous predecessors and those who followed them in righteousness. They trusted Allaah The Almighty and were committed to His way. They also made the Quran and the Sunnah a constitution, a way of life, and a source to comply with and apply in both words and actions. They did not develop methods based on tribal tendencies, personal inclinations, nor did they enjoy or boast of positions of authority.

They adhered to what came to them from Allaah The Almighty, clung to it with their teeth, and did not give heed to the Indian and Greek philosophies and other philosophies. They were not dazzled by the preceding civilizations and thus, were strangers, because they were few amidst many deviant sects. Hence, they were distinguished both from the outside and from the inside, and the necks of rulers like Khosrau bowed to them, and the thrones of despots collapsed in front of them.

The secret behind their distinction and power lay in their constant observance of the Divine commands. They feared Allaah The Almighty and followed what earned them His Pleasure. They gathered around the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, on a common word. Hence, Allaah The Almighty was pleased with them and they were pleased with Him. Allaah The Almighty granted them security after they had been struck with fear and established their religion which He has preferred for them. This marked the start of the formation of the Islamic state.

Allaah The Almighty Says (what means): {Allaah has promised those who have believed among you and done righteous deeds that He will surely grant them succession [to authority] upon the earth just as He granted it to those before them and that He will surely establish for them [therein] their religion which He has preferred for them and that He will surely substitute for them, after their fear, security, [for] they worship Me, not associating anything with Me. But whoever disbelieves after that -- then those are the defiantly disobedient.} [Quran 24:55]

We should follow them, especially in this time of alienation and disagreement.

Sister, you are a caretaker in your home and are (along with your husband), responsible for those under your care before Allaah The Almighty on the Day of Judgment. Both of you are the hope for providing the Ummah with righteous and believing members with the guidance and success granted by Allaah The Almighty. You can achieve this by:

a- Providing your children with an upbringing that boosts their faith, to be satisfied with Allaah The Almighty as their Lord, with Islam as their religion, and with Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, as their Prophet and Messenger. This is to help them submit to the commands of Allaah The Almighty, to be satisfied with His Judgment, to adhere to His Sharee‘ah (Islamic legislation), and to apply the etiquette ordained by Him. You should teach them to fear Allaah The Almighty wisely and with good reasoning.

By being a role model and by love and compassion you can unite your family members, rectify them and get each member to understand his role and what is divinely required of him in this world. By doing so, you will fortify your family against the plots of the enemies from among the humans and the Jinn through good care and guidance. Allaah The Almighty Says (what means): {So by mercy from Allaah, [O Muhammad], you were lenient with them. And if you had been rude [in speech] and harsh in heart, they would have disbanded from about you. So pardon them and ask forgiveness for them and consult them in the matter. And when you have decided, then rely upon Allaah. Indeed, Allaah loves those who rely [upon Him].} [Quran 3:159]

b- Inculcating in your children the rule of Walaa’ (allegiance to believers)and Baraa’(dissociation from disbelievers), so that they acquire (religious) immunity, farsightedness, caution and care. Instill in them a spirit of compliance with the Quran and the Sunnah (tradition) as well as remind them of the stories and lessons included in them. This is to counter the savage attack on Islam and Muslims and the temptations that are propagated in the process. This is also to keep your children updated on current events and help them understand what is happening around them so that they will not be taken unawares.

In doing so, every believer will come to have one single concern, which is to offer their souls in defense of the creed and religion. In times of temptations and trials, reactions to the wrongdoings around us will not be restricted to mere demonstrations, sermons, passionate rhetoric, threats, allusions to the past by mentioning the glory days and history of one’s ancestors, without being affected by the past and present situations or by deriving lessons from them. Then, they will not end up ineffectual like bubbles, by leveling accusations at each other, begging for mercy and looking for guidance from the East and the West to address their ordeal, having forgotten to resort to the Lord of the heavens and the earth.

When the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, died, Abu Bakr As-Siddeeq, may Allaah be pleased with him, said, “Whoever used to worship Muhammad, then (let him know that) Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, has died; and whoever used to worship Allaah, then Allaah The Almighty is alive and He will never die.”

No tribal affiliations, no allegiance to individuals, groups, or organizations! Allegiance is for no one but Allaah The Almighty and what His Messenger, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, communicated on His behalf.

c- Instilling the principles of mercy, love, generosity, altruism, chivalry, and sympathy among family members, relatives and society. You should develop a sense of responsibility, social solidarity and team work among them, so they can help the needy, collect charity, food and clothing and participate in relieving the wounded and sick people during times of calamities.

In a Hadeeth (narration) on the authority of Anas, may Allaah be pleased with him, he said that the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: “Indeed, there are people who are keys of good and locks of evil; and certainly there are people who are keys of evil and locks of good. Glad tidings are for those whom Allaah has enabled [to be] the keys of good [and facilitated] good through them; and doomed are those whom evil is facilitated through them.” [Saheeh]

People who are keys to evil and locks of good are the source of all temptations, being undutiful to parents, severance of the ties of kinship, breaking up of social bonds, weakening of the social fabric, corruption, sins, wars and ordeals, because they suffer from some dangerous diseases in their hearts and the contagion of their diseases spread. We supplicate Allaah The Almighty to save us from them. Beware of such ailments that comprise:

- Having weak faith in Allaah The Almighty and the Last Day.

- Taking the Divine commands and the injunctions of Sharee‘ah lightly.

- Forgetting that angels register sayings and deeds. Allaah The Almighty Says (what means): {And everything they did is in written records. And every small and great [thing] is inscribed.} [Quran 52:52-53]

- Forgetting death and its agonies, and the bliss and torment of the grave.

- Seeking the short-lived pleasures of the world, and deeming Paradise and its bliss and Hell and its torment as insignificant. Allaah The Almighty Says (what means): {So as for he who transgressed and preferred the life of the world, then indeed, Hellfire will be [his] refuge. But as for he who feared the position of his Lord and prevented the soul from [unlawful] inclination, then indeed, Paradise will be [his] refuge.} [Quran 79:37-41]

- Showing impatience and weak will because of weakness of character induced by vices of arrogance, grudge, envy, jealousy and selfishness. People who have such characteristics do not enjoy peace of mind themselves and cannot bear to leave others to enjoy it. They are the doors to all temptations and evil. We seek refuge in Allaah The Almighty from them.

Allaah The Almighty Says (what means): {And who is better in speech than one who invites to Allaah and does righteousness and says, “Indeed, I am of the Muslims.” And not equal are the good deed and the bad. Repel [evil] by that [deed] which is better; and thereupon the one whom between you and him is enmity [will become] as though he was a devoted friend. But none is granted it except those who are patient, and none is granted it except one having a great portion [of good]. And if there comes to you from Satan an evil suggestion, then seek refuge in Allaah. Indeed, He is The Hearing, The Knowing.} [Quran 41:23-26]

d- It is great to be a good companion to your husband. In this regard, it is advisable to consider matters duly, weigh your priorities as instructed by Divine guidance. To that end, you should live kindly with your husband, take lessons from the stories of the early and late generations, advise your husband and have mutual understanding with him about bringing up the children, dealing with your families and addressing family problems after due deliberation. This will keep the family strong and cohesive.

The Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: “The best of your women is the affectionate, the fertile, the obedient and the consoling, if they fear Allaah. The most evil of your women are those who do not adhere to Hijaab and those who swagger, and these are the hypocrites. only a few of them(i.e., women in general) will enter Paradise.” [Saheeh]

Help your husband and children and support them in maintaining their honor and dignity and whatever elevates them and is beneficial to Islam. Encourage them to adhere to Islam, invite others to it and to have patience with that seeking to obey Allaah The Almighty and seeking His Pleasure.

Many women – may Allaah guide them – only care about themselves and are concerned for nothing but the worldly life. So, beware, sister, of hindering the path of goodness and of averting others from the path of Allaah The Almighty. The Mothers of the Believers, may Allaah be pleased with them all, should be role models for us to follow.

Khadeejah, may Allaah be pleased with her, was the best woman and she was the first person to believe in the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam. When the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, was commanded by Allaah The Almighty to convey the message and the Divine revelation started to come to him, Khadeejah, may Allaah be pleased with her, supported him financially and spiritually. When the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, recounted to her his experience with the revelation, she calmed him down and sai, “By Allaah, Allaah will never let you down, for you maintain kinship ties, help the weak, entertain your guests and help out those who are stricken with calamity.” [Al-Bukhaari and Muslim]

Serious trials have afflicted the Muslims and have stormed each of their families, including the trial of     doubts, desires, bad company, unrighteous leaders, deviant sects, wealth, Riba-based banks, and impious husbands, children, and women. Be mindful of Allaah The Almighty, lest you get embroiled in these trials. Do not cause temptations or instigate them. In a Hadeeth on the authority of Usaamah ibn Zayd and Sa‘eed ibn Zayd ibn ‘Amr ibn Nufayl, may Allaah be pleased with them, they said that the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: “I have not left behind me any temptation that is more harmful to men than women.”[Al-Bukhaari and Muslim]
